Sensei Matt Price Visits Tuam
Faolchú Karate Club had the pleasure of hosting Sensei Matt Price in Tuam, Co. Galway.
Sensei Price makes an annual visit to The West Coast of Ireland, each year bringing current and new training methods and information from England, Japan and the top elite WKF events worldwide.
There where 4 training sessions across the weekend. Saturday was an intensive 4 hour session which was split into a morning kata session and afternoon kumite drills.
Empi and the rarely taught Chinte where the focal points of our kata session, along with coaching on how to present kata in a confident and relaxed manner.
The advanced kumite session was a technically based session where we ran drills and built up scoring profiles. The floor was open to questions and during a topically based afternoon we explored how to fight various opponents like how taller and heavier fighters can be bested and how to deal with a light agile fighter.
Sunday had three 1 hour sessions where classes where divided by age and grade, with the youngest students from 4 years old.
Children participated in fun filled activities and drills where they developed speed and good karate technique, all in a light hearted environment. Both students and parents praised Sensei Matts training methods and warm personality.
Next years session has already been booked!

Your Old Clothes!
Our first squad event is already planned, The Piltown Championships. Faolchú attended the competition last year, had great success and a nice time getting to know each other as a club over the weekend.
This year the event will be on the 26th of February.
To help with funding the squad we are looking for your old clothes! We would appreciate if all club members and their families could donate used clothes, handbags, shoes, sheets or belts (no curtains, quilts, pillows and non clothing items) and bring them along to class on the last week of January. We can then trade them in a "Clothes for Cash" scheme where they offer 50c per kilo. These clothes are taken to countries like Russia or the Ukraine where they have a resale value.
Thanks for your support.

JKS Autumn Championships
Tuam Karate Club Faolchú, travelled to Dublin to compete in the JKS Autumn Championships last Sunday.
JKS Irish Championships are of the most difficult to place and win in Ireland in my own experience but this did not deter our students and they where aware of the challenge ahead of them. Seven children from Tuam travelled along with Donegal Faolchú member Marty Boyle.
Several other countries and a large variety of clubs came on the day, making the event very large and competitive. All students progressed through several rounds, with Dean Rigney and Dylan Buckley making it into the 6th round on kata and Regan Warde making into the 5th round. This is a great achievement and in the majority of other Irish tournaments would see you win.
Kumite also proved a challenge, with Dean Rigney and Sarah Rigney loosing out to Black belts (one of whom is current world champions) and they didn't shy away either both fought their corner with determination and pride.
Jayden Murphy and Jadzia Murphy came within a whisker of 3rd place whenever they tied in their final round of gohan kumite but lost out by 2:1 on the judges decision.
Nathan Collins also barely missed out on the 3rd round of kata by the same judgement call.
Marty Boyle our only adult competing on the day, came 2nd in kumite and 3rd in kata, excellent result, well done.
We are exceptionally proud of all our competitors they really shone bright on the day and proved themselves honorable and very capable karateka. This was the first competition of this scale and at a national level for almost all of our Tuam Karate Students and they really did well.
A JKS medal has never been an easy achievement but one well worth earning.
