New Years Resolutions

Happy 2012 everyone.
The question is, what makes 31st of December any different than January 1st?
The Answer: New Years Resolutions.
It is for me anyway but what's the point and why make them when most of us won't last until February? Personally, I love New Years Resolutions. The main reasons being that each year I believe in a new me, a fitter, healthier, happier and more efficient human being. Who is the kind of friend and family member everyone should have. Admittedly some years are more productive than others, some years I make big progress, some years I'm glad we all made it out alive! But every year I have the dream, the optimism that I'll get there.
I like to make a small list of goals. The next belt, the family Saturdays, or one this year is getting around a nearby hill.
For the past few months myself and my friend Liam have returned to running. We run around a hiking route, where the first mile is all uphill. This year I'm going to run around it twice and at a good pace. That's not something that'll happen soon at my current rate of progress but I'll do it this year. Either way it's a win:win situation. Which is the real reason for having resolutions. If I don't make it and never reach that goal this year, for what ever reason, I'll have spent time working on my physical health, my fitness and my mental health (and time running with a friend that I otherwise wouldn't). Like Bruce Lee said "A goal isn't always something to be reached, it simply serves as something to aim at".
My other reason for the New Year Resolutions List is a little less pure and budo. Knowing that I'll be a better person in January allows all that over indulgence and laziness in December and over the Christmas break because I really love Christmas.

Planned Charity Event

Last years charity event was a great success, raising over €1000 for MS suffers in Tuam.

We would like to keep our Kickathon as an annual event as we feel it's important to install a sense of community and civic duty in our young students.

From last years feedback, their was a great sense of pride amoungst those who took part, knowing that they'd "helped sick people".

Our event won't be on until September. What we are looking for now are nominations for which charity to fundraise for. If there is a charity that you are involved in or is close to your heart please let us know and we will consider making it our charity of choice.

Faolchú Competition

Our annual Faolchú inhouse competition is planned for the 30th of July. This is an event suitable for every one of our students. Details of catagories will be sent out closer to the time.

The purpose of our inhouse competition is to positively encourage all students and give them an opportunity to demonstate their skills and knowledge for family and friends in a safe environment. It also gives the additional advantage to club members that they can learn the rules of competition and get the experiance without having to travel. There will be trophies for 1st, 2nd and joint 3rd with a competitors medal for all.

As a bonus this year the JKS our governing organisation have asked to to select our champions in various events to go forward to compete at the Irish club championships (at no cost to selected members).

Further details will be posted on the notice board as they are finalised.

Koike Sensei 5th Dan JKS

On Sunday 6th March Sensei Yutaka Koike 5th Dan Technical Director of JKS Karate Italy, an all Japan Karate Champion and University Karate Instructor Course Graduate travelled to Tuam.

Karate students from a number of clubs travelled to take part. The morning was devoted to children from the age of 4 years. Everyone had a great time. With the lesson for the class being on how to create great spirit in the Dojo while having fun and learning core principals of karate.

A number of Faolchú Students graded after the class and all were successfull.

The second half of the day was for adults and over 35 people attended some travelling from Donegal, Cork, Longford and Mayo. The lesson for adults was on the correct use of breathing to create more power within karate techniques.

Everyone had a great day and Koike Sensei posed for many photos and was asked to autograph a number of grading books. A testament to his enlightened instruction.

More Photos to follow later

Karate Suits

I will be putting in orders this week for the childrens karate suits. Many parents have put in orders and with any luck by the next class all the karate suits will be here and we will have an excited group of karate kids!
Anyone else who would like to put in an order please contact me asap to be included in this mailing.
There is no pressure on parents to buy suits at this stage and i will put in another order later in the year for anyone who would rather hold off for a while.
We are very happy and proud of how all our students are currently progressing, they are all keen and dedicated and our Tuam Karate Club really is something to be proud of.
Keep up the good work.
