Little Dragons Success

Well done to Alana, Leo, Cian & Dominick. Who successfully competed at the Little Dragons Tournament in Ballina today. By all accounts in a well run and friendly event Faolchu students fought off stiff competition to place 1st and two 3rd places in kata and two 3rd places in kumite, narrowly missing out on a couple of close calls!
Big thanks to MVF and Zanshin for a great event.

MVF Awards Night

MVF where very kind to invite us to their annual awards night last Saturday in Ballina. It was great to get together with all the MVF guys and was a real all round family event. A huge thanks to Master Harry Thompson (and his support crew). I have never previously had the experience of being amongst such a close knit and welcoming school of Martial Arts, until I met up with MVF and can only hope that we will grew to become as strong a group as we develop.

Master Wally Dillon, Li Ching Wu

Malcolm and I where invited to a training seminar on Saturday in Ballina by MVF Martial Arts Club were Master Wally Dillon was instructing a seminar. I had previously seen Sifu on the cover of "Irish Fighter" and read an article that had really inspired me to meet him, he had such an interesting journey through his martial arts study.

Master Dillon was instructing courses over the weekend in various aspects of Li Chung Wu. Saturdays classes focused on ground fighting and holds.

Being inexperianced in ground work myself there was alot to take in! But Master Dillon was very patient and encouraging, building all techniques up gradually, which allowed me to get to grasp with what I was learning whilst going in to greater detail for those experianced grapplers.

After the seminar we got to talk with Sifu a little and I was pleasantly taken with what a humble accesable man he is. Once again I was reminded how much more there is to learn in martial arts and why it's one of the few activities that can be pursued for a lifetime. I look forward to training with Master Dillon again.

Ballina Little Dragons Competition

Last Sunday 25 members from Faolchú travelled to Ballina in Co. Mayo to take part in an invitational competition designed to expose students to the joys of competition in a safe and friendly way. As usual all students were confident and eager to take on the world! The Little Dragons was designed for children aged between 4 and 12, so there was a keen interest because events like this are rarely seen in Connaught.

Over 200 children took part from a number of clubs and from beginner to brown belt in Karate kata & kumite and in Kickboxing points & continuous, so we had to knuckle down!

But there was never any fear, our guys kept their cool and brought their skills.

There were some exceptional victories on the day, 5 of our students came in 1st place and really shone when the odds where against them. And equally impressive were those who brought their best and it just wasn't their day, I am always humbled to see a child maintain dignity and respect even when it's difficult!

Competition is a great opportunity to test our character and skills and hopefully make friends and have fun too.

Congratulations to all club members who took part, we are very proud of you. The club did exceptionally well taking home 21 medals between them. Setting a president as a club of champions.
